Control Your Golf Shot with the Right Golf Irons
One of the most important aspects to golf is choosing the appropriate clubs to carry in your set. The quality and efficiency of your club set is largely going to be determined by the various irons that you have. Only through carefully choosing the right clubs are you going to be able to hit the ball farther, more accurately and ultimately improve upon your game.
Irons are aptly named because the heads of the clubs are made up of metal, which historically has been cast-iron. Even though wood drivers are currently made out of metal as opposed to wood, irons have been exclusively made out of metal for as long as the game of golf has been a sport. Irons are intended for use on the fairway, in between driving the ball, and putting on the green. There are several different types of irons that you should choose, depending on your style, skill level, and athletic ability.
Some individuals recommend that beginner golfers use iron clubs that are characterized by a cavity back style. It has also been suggested that golfers who only play recreationally should choose this type of style as well. Cavity back or perimeter weighted irons have a hollowed out club head that makes it much easier to consistently strike the ball in comparison to traditional muscle back irons. This club can be a great help to players as it makes it easier to get greater distance on the ball due to the clubs extra weight.
More experienced players will typically use a muscle back style, or blade style iron. These irons do not have a cavity and provide the user with a stronger, fuller stroke. A muscle back iron also gives a player more strength behind his or her shots.
It is also important to understand the basics behind irons, so that you can purchase a set that will provide the strongest stroke and greatest distance. A “traditional” set typically has a combined total of eight irons, ranging from a 3 iron through a pitching wedge. The different irons are identified by their number, or by a PW as in the case of a pitching wedge.
As the irons increase in number their shaft length decreases and the loft that they subsequently produce rises. This means that a three iron will have less of a loft and a longer shaft than a four iron, and so on. It is also important to remember that there is a yardage gap between the irons, which equals to roughly about 10 to 15 yards. For example, three irons produce a shot that is 10 or 15 yards longer than four irons. As you are moving through your set to the shorter and loftier clubs, a steeper trajectory should emerge as well. Shorter and more lofted clubs will mean that your shots will rise at a steeper angle and will also fall at a steeper angle.
Once you understand how the different types of irons work, you can start to pick out the irons that will benefit your game. Keep in mind that it is not always important to use the iron that will give you the farthest distance. i.e., long irons. Often times you will want to use your mid irons-5, 6, or 7 that will aid you in hitting shorter shots. This is why it is important to buy a full set of well rounded clubs, so that you have a club ready for any situation that might arise.
In some situations you will need to purchase golf clubs separately. The 1 iron and 2 iron clubs are not normally included in a typical set of clubs. The 1 iron and 2 iron clubs have long shaft, a thin club head, and do not provide much loft. This means that a beginning golfer probably is not going to want to learn with these types of clubs because they are typically not suited for novice players. Therefore, it is best to start with a general set of clubs, and then purchase 1 and 2 irons once you start to hone your skills. Most experts also advise that beginners and recreational players stay away from the 3 and 4 irons, and use fairway woods or utility clubs instead.
Skill and commitment are important for improving your golf game, but so is having the right set of tools. Also take advantage of tips online or from your local golf pro. There is plenty of great information available which can point you in the right direction. With the right set of clubs, and some good advice, you can discover the weaknesses in your game, and improve upon them. In time, you should be able to control the ball with a much higher degree of accuracy while continuing to build upon your golfing skills, all the while having a great time out on the course and at the driving range.
