Is a planets gravity and magnetic field the same or are they two different things?
I read a paper on the Messenger Fly-By of Mercury and it stated that Mercury and Earth were the only two inter planets that had a magnetic field. I thought all heavenely bodies had a magnetic field.
Additionally, the article stated that being so close to the sun, the solar wind blew the magnetosphere very close to the surface on the windward side and that it was elongated on the backside of the planet.
Gravity and the magnetic field are two different things. They represent two of the four fundamental forces in the satndard model of physics: gravitational force and electro-magnetic force. (The other two are the strong and weak nuclear forces.)
All bodies with mass exhibit gravity, but not all have a magnetic field. The magnetic field of the Earth, for example, is thought to arise from the fact that it has a molten iron core that creates the field as the Earth rotates.
