what is the difference between shell snowboard jackets and softshell snowboard jackets?
im trying to buy a snowboard jacket but i dont know what shell and softshell mean. also should all jackets be insulated? what is the advantage of an insulated compared to a noninsulated one?
THANKS!
Most hardshell jackets tend to be made from a waterproof/breathable material such as Gore-Tex or one of the many "generic" or "brand specific" w/b materials. Generally these resemble what most people think of when you say "ski jacket" or "snowboard jacket." Some have liners for added warmth and some have no insulating layer. The insulating layer is usually fleece and a lot of times it can be zipped into the shell. The upside of going with a hardshell is it gives you variety. a) just the shell when it is warm but sloppy; b) just the liner when you don't need a shell; c) both when it is downright cold. Personally, I would buy a separate shell and fleece liner. If they don't zip into each other, no biggie. Taking them off to unzip one is a pain. Get a lighterweight shell and invest in a fleece made form either Gore Windstopper or Polartec Windbloc fleece.
Softshells come in several varieties and are made of several different materials as well. The most common is Schoeller fabric. This is somewhat water repellant and stretchy. Other softshell fabrics are waterproof. There are a variety of these as well. Like hardshells, most companies have their own brand of waterproof softshell material. (ie. Conduit by Mountain Hardwear.) Most softshells don't have a zip-in feature and only a handful are heavily insulated. They are normally intended to wear either in warmer temperatures with lightweight layers underneath or during active sports where you generate a lot of body heat. IMO, buying a softshell that is not waterproof is pretty pointless because the purpose of having one is to eliminate wearing a waterproof hardshell. I just bought one, so we'll see how well it hold up this winter...so far, so good.
The other pros to softshells are a) quieter; b) lighter; and c) easier to store in a pack if needed.
