Somthings really bugging me...?
I was in town this morning helping pack bags for a supermarket in uniform to raise money (im a cadet). Anyway, this one old woman comes through the till im working on, i ask her if she wants help to which she replies 'most certainly not! and its such a crying shame that a girl like you has nothing better to do that train to be a killer.'
TBH it didnt really bother me much at the time, and the woman on the till agreed with me that she was a)senile or b) was married to a squaddie that left her, but its starting to really bug me. I guess i didnt really know people like that really EXISTED outside the internet. In my experience, people have always seemed to treat me better in uniform. Are there many ACTUAL people like her? or was she the exeption rather than the rule?
Im definatelly not saying that people should treat me better because im in uniform, thats just somthing i have observed, and that i had never encountered someone like her before.
That attitude isn't new. This was written in the1800s by Rudyard Kipling.
"Tommy" by Rudyard Kipling
"I went into a public house to get a pint of beer.
“The publican he turns and says ‘we don't serve redcoats here.’
“The girls behind the bar they giggled and laughed fit to die.
“I ups and outs into the streets and to myself says I,
“Oh, it's ‘Tommy this’ and ‘Tommy that’ and ‘chuck him out, the brute.’
“But it's ‘savior of his country’ when the guns begin to shoot.”
I was in the Navy from 1960 through 1985. And I still get the reaction, "Oh...Wait a minute.. Didn't you say you were in during the 1960s and 1970s? Isn't that when that Vietnam thingy was going on? I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood. I thought you said you were a veteran." I suppose, were I to play their game, I might reply, "That's ok.... we all make mistakes. Somehow I mistook you for an intelligent American. I see I was mistaken on both accounts. My apologies." But I don't.
On the other hand, I was a store with my uncle and commented that some of the guys at the veteran's home where I live might like a particular product. A lady nearby overheard the comment and asked, "Are you a Veteran?" I said that I am. She extended her hand and thanked me for my service.
One of the latter once in a while... and, though not as prevalent as perhaps they should be, they're not too infrequent... really erases a lot of moronic retorts, innuendo, disrespect, and even hate. Don't bother with the jerks. They're beneath contempt... so don't bother. If you let them get to you, they win. I think the definitive response might be to grin and say, "Yes, ma'am. You're absolutely right. And you're very welcome." But, probably the most effective response is none at all.
