Awesome Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS Driver
When Cleveland golf first released the HiBore driver in 2006, the newly designed head stood the golf world on its ear. Fast forward to the beginning of 2009, a mere three years later, and we're on the fourth iteration of the scooped-back driver. This one, as the name implies, is a monster.
The high-launch, low-spin mantra that has been the backbone of driver design is taken to new heights with the Monster. The advantage of this year's model is more of an emphasis on MOI or moment of inertia, the resistance to twisting at impact. The USGA limitation of a 5900 rating is pushed to the Ping i15 Irons limit with extreme rear and perimeter weighting of 24 additional grams.
The length is a whopping 46.5 inches thanks to a Made by Fujikura Flightspeed shaft. The stock shaft offering is the Flightspeed in all flexes and Gold (lower flight and lighter swingweight) or Red (higher flight and heavier swingweight). There are a wide variety of custom shafts from multiple manufacturers, which fit a range of golfers.
Technology Overview-
Well look out! The Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS is peeking it's large, thin face around the corner staring you right in the face! This is Cleveland's biggest and baddest (make that broadest) hitting area to date, covering 16 percent larger than it's predecessor, the HiBore XLS! That's a big increase. The intent of Cleveland? To provide an ultra-stable and ultra-forgiving driver. By all indications, it looks like they've succeeded.
The HiBore Monster is by all means a high launch, low spin driver. The clubface was raised relative to where the sole touches the ground to reduce the mass by 7 grams to achieve the high launch/low spin combination.Cleveland HiBore XLS Monster Is Hot, Forgiving - and Loud
Cleveland claims the face of the driver is 16-percent larger than the previous XLS driver.
Judging from the drives that fellow club members and I hit, you pretty much just can't miss with the Monster. The sweet spot appears to have expanded to the entire face. The test club was a stiff-flex gold shafted, Ping Anser Forged Irons standard model, 10.5 degrees.
One thing that immediately stands out about the Monster is its sound. It is LOUD! A well-struck ball sounds like it has been fired from a cannon. In fact, to my eyes that is the speed at which the ball comes off the face. The flight of the ball seemed like it was drawn onto the sky by an engineer; meaning, it was almost a perfect version of what ideal launch angle is prescribed. With a square face and neutral weighting, I was able to work the ball into a fade with a little more effort. A fellow club member who was working on "dispersion" issues (as in excessive fade) with his current driver immediately straightened out direction and launched the ball with a very controlled trajectory.
Features-
- Fujikura Flightspeed Fit-On Red/Gold Shaft Fitting System
- "Sweet Spot = Hot Spot"
- Crown Plaque Alignment Aid
- Unique grip tread design for maximum control
- Patented EZ-Grab head cover which is standard with all HiBore drivers.
- Comes in Draw XLS with a 3 degree closed face, offset design and draw biased weighting.
- Tour XLS as well with a 2 degree open face and fade biased weighting.
- Selection of up to 2 standard shafts which includes Fujikura Flightspeed Fit-on Golf and Fit-on Red. And if you decide to go custom, Cleveland offers up to 15 other including the Mitsubishi Diamana, Grafalloy and Aldila custom shafts!

TaylorMade Burner 09 TP?
I'm a 20 handicapper and went through the TaylorMade online driver custom fitting. I only drive the ball 200 yards, even though I use a Wilson Ultra driver (beginner club). The custom fitting program suggested I use a Burner 09 TP driver with a regular shaft (Mitsubishi Diamana) 9.5 degrees of loft. isn't it too hard of a club for a 20 handicapper to use?
this driver has a 1 to 2 degrees open face but i'm looking for more of a draw since sometimes i slice the ball
i slice the ball 1 or 2 times out of ten drives
i'm not much of a slicer anymore. about a month ago i used to slice every drive but now i'm gaining a lot of control over my game. just to give you more info i've been playing for about 8 months
The TP line of Taylormade is the high-end version. The face is 1-2* open, but the high-end shaft, in your case, the Diamana Whiteboard, also boosts the cost. Do you really need that now? I don't think so.
I personally believe you should see a local clubfitter. Some charge a fee, some don't, some do but deduct it from the cost of the club. S/He can see how your ball flight is (too high? too low? losing shots to the left/right?, etc) and deduce what club is best for you. It might be your shaft is too long/short. It could be your shaft is wither too whippy or too stiff (not all of those clubs like yours are totally honest about shaft flex). It may be something simple, like how you set up to the ball. The eye of the clubfitter can deduce these things. Either way, make sure you get fit for loft, length, and shaft flex- see what s/he recommends in regards to ball flight. Some, especially the independent fitters, can recommend shaft brands.
If they don't, here's an idea: get fit for your driver by a pro... hopefully, for free. After you do that, go to the website down below. You'll have all your specs, so this will be a snap. Enter all the info that you have where it asks you. You'll then be taken to a screen where you can choose all major brands of clubs (not just drivers, but if that's all you want, you can do that too). After you decide what driver you want, you'll be given a choice of what shaft brand you want. If you so choose because on most, there's an upcharge, you can get a list breaking down shafts (including the stock option) based on desired ball flight. You can buy it from there, if you choose, but it'll at least give you an idea what amount of money you'll be looking to spend for your driver.
