My right wrist hurts after a round of golf. I use the baseball grip and have midsize soft grips.?
Would I be better off using the overlap grip?
Assuming you're convinced the pain is a result of your golf, I can make the following educated guess: Your wrists at impact are not in line with your forearms. In other words, your wrist is probably bowed at impact which means the wrist join is absorbing quite a bit of the force of impact. To compare your grip with those used by the majority of touring professionals, visit
http://www.golfnutts.com/grip.html
While you're checking that out, something that may help with the pain immediately and serve to eventually eliminate it is to poke the muscle on top of your forearm in search of any sore spots. My guess is you'll find a hot one just below your elbow. Place your right arm on a table and your left elbow on the hot spot. Press down as hard as you can stand for about 10 seconds with steady pressure. Release then massage to increase circulation. Wait a few minutes and repeat. You'll find each time you do it, the pain will have diminished and you'll be able to press harder.
Then I'd go to work to neutralize the grip. While you're at www.golfnutts.com, visit the pages dealing with Profile and Balance. If you're not in balance to start with, you won't let yourself shift your weight in the backswing. This puts you ahead of the ball at impact and forces you to hit from the top to catch up. This usually results in bent wrists at impact.
If it's not a grip/swing issue...
Being an avid golfer of 4x week, you might need to cut back; discuss your situation with your physician, sports medicine. Have a baseline MRI done to look at tendons, ligaments, bones etc. If all is well and just strain, arthritis use supportive aids, acupuncture, and cut back when necessary; playing golf 2x week is better than not playing at all. Listen to your body.
Using supportive wrist bands can also help for arthritic and weak wrists.
Can also look to www.powerbalance.com for wrist band, necklace for ionic syncing to create more power, balance and flexibility.
