Why do Muslims make such unnecessary sacrifices?
Those poor animals.
Shia's beating themselves - and encouraging their children to do it too! Soon. I believe Ashura is the 27th.
Wearing those unsightly headcovers just to look devout - at the risk of being rejected from society.
Is this really what God expects of them?
I thought God was reasonable and does not expect such bizarre demonstrations of faith?
Are those animals still "poor" when they are slaughtered for food, killed for hunting or kept in inhumane manners?
Or are they only "poor animals" when they are used in a religious custom you do not understand.
While the animals are slaughtered for religious purposes, they are still being consumed.
I dont see how that sets them apart for when they are slaughtered for food.
Headcoverings are not exclusive to Islam. Other religious beliefs also require them or suggest them.
I have no issue with the hijab (headscarf) if it is worn voluntarily.
They are not unsightly but even if they were, that is not a sufficient basis to prohibit them or anything.
Shia's are a branch of Islam so it is not all Muslims who share those practices.
And self-flagelation and self-punishment is also not exclusive to Islam. Ever hear of devout Christians who have themselves "crucifed" come Easter time?

All religion, to me, lacks reason. But they are rituals and traditions and systems of beliefs that seem unreasonable to me because I am not a part of them.
To the followers, the case is otherwise.
