What is the name of the painting of the man with the woman in a green gown?
Art is not my forte, though I do enjoy studying for leisure. However, I CANNOT remember the name and artist of a specific painting that is really well known. It features a very pale man (I'm almost thinking this was meant as a self portrait) with a woman behind him in green, almost looking pregnant although I know that was just the style of the gown. There is also a mirror in the background, and I think a small dog next to him. Maybe it's from the Baroque era? I'm really not sure. Help would be greatly appreciated!
The painting is by Jan Van Eyck, the legendary Dutch painter who was one of the earliest oil painters, and the picture is dated 1434. The painting has changed hands several times and its original title is long lost. The picture is now in the National Gallery in London, U.K. The picture is thought to depict merchant Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife, but that's about all anybody knows. The symbolism is hotly debated by art historians. Go to http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects.dll/CollectionPublisher.woa/wa/work?workNumber=NG186 for a picture and a brief article.
