Every golfer has his own preference when it comes to golf club sets. However, in general, a set used to play one round of the game needs to have a maximum of fourteen clubs. A full set is normally made up of a set of irons from three to nine, a driver, a pitching wedge, two fairway woods (usually a three and a five), a putter, a sand wedge, and one last one of the golfer's choice, perhaps a hybrid club. In numbered irons, the three, five, seven, and nine and is also a common variation. In irons, on the other hand, any other combination is more preferred than the three and the four, which are generally found to be hard to hit. Hybrid clubs are becoming more popular these days and enjoying space in golfers' golf club sets because they allow easier hits.

he's new to the game, but plays off about 15 .... but I want to get a decent set, any suggestions?
The best set to get him is one that is fitted to him.You would have to let him go to a pro shop to be fitted.Everything from irons,drivers,and even a putter.I am not just saying this to help pro shop sales.I got a cheap set fit to me and it played better than an expensive set,and cost less.I am not saying an expensive set wouldnt make him happy,but getting fitted would make you a hero,he might find get a lesson from the pro fitting him and help his game while he is getting a new set of clubs.
